Welcome to the dictionary. Here you'll find terms used frequently on this site and in the game. The defitions are taken directly from the game and give only a brief overview, so, you won't run into too many unncessary spoilers. For now it's short (long?) and deals with items or people that have a direct influence on Hijikata-san.

Dictionary

Battle of Hakodate: A last, fierce battle between the old shogunate troops and the Imperial Army in Ezo.

bloodlust: A term used in reference to the ravenous thirst for blood that one develops after becoming a fury.

Enmoto Takeaki: Second in command of the shogunate navy, and captain of the flagship Kaiyomaru.

Furies: A creature with heightened speed and strength, and the ability to heal from almost any wound. Drinking the Water of Life will transform a human into a fury. One must stab a fury through the heart or remove its head in order to truly kill it. Their incredible strength and power are balanced by the fact that the use of these abilities shortens their lifespan significantly.

Fury Corps: A secret division made up of men who have become furies. Sometimes refered to obliquely among the Shinsengumi as "the Corps."

Hakuoki: A demon name meaning "demon of the fleeting blossom."

Hijikata Toshizou: The Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is a long time friend of Kondou, and helped him form the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. Kondou calls him "Toshi." Became a fury after drinking the Water of Life.

Ishida Medicinal Powder: A powedered medicine that was manufactured and sold by the familiy of Hijikata Toshizou. It claimed to have a positive effect on bonesettings, bruises, muscular pains, and minor cuts.

Izuminokami Kanesada:The favored sword of Hijikata Toshizou, it was the work of an 11th generation Kanesada swordsmith.

Kazama Chikage: A very skilled man with apparent ties to the Satsuma Domain. His extreme strength and prowess with sowrds rivals that of the best Shinsengumi swordsman.Claims to be a demon. He has a very specific interest in the heorine.

kincho: The act of hittig one's sword or scabbard with another's to indicate both parties swearing an oath.

Kondou Isami: One of the foundes of the Shinsegumi, an organization created to keep peace in Kyoto. He is originally from Edo.

Kouyou Regulatory Company: The name given to the Shinsengumi by the shogunate when they were ordered to quell the uprisings in the Koshu (also known as Kouyo) region.

Otori Keisuke: A man of humble birth, he studied western gunner and military strategy before joining the army. He was quickly promote to vassal and then Infantry Magistrate.

ronin: Samurai who have left their master, or who have been stripped of their privileges. Can also be used to refer to a samurai who does not have a master to serve.

Sanaan Keisuke : A colonel in the Shinsengumi, he is a native of Edo. He is essentially a costultant to the chief of the Shinsegumi, Kondou Isami. He was officially recorded as being deceased, when in fact he drank the Water of Life and became a fury. He is in commad of the Fury Corps.

Shinsengumi: A military unit made up of ronin, the purpose of which was to restore public order in Kyoto and counteract the local anti-shogunate forces.

Tama: Refers to Tama County - also known as Bushu - in Musashi province. Both Kondou and Hijikata are natives of this area.

takiawase: a type of "kaiseki" - a multi-course Japanese meal analogous to haute cuisine - where each ingredient is simmered separately. Usually includes vegetables, meat, fish, or tofu.

the Watch: An organization that monitored internal Shinsengumi affairs and conducted external covert reconnisance. They reported directly to Commander Hijikata.

Water of Life: A substance imported from the West that turns those who take it into furies. Until it was refined by Yukiura Kodo, it was too toxic to use.

Wolves of Mibu: A nickname given to the men who would later become the Shinsengumi. It was both a reference to their reputation and an alternate spelling of their original name, Miburo, which means "ronin of Mibu."

Yamazaki Susumu: A Shinsengumi officer and spy, he is a memeber of the Watch and reports to Hijikata.

Yukimura Chizuru: The main character of the story. She travels to Kyoto in search of her father, and consequently finds herself involved with the Shinsegumi. Informed by Princess Sen that she is a demon.
