Welcome to the Trivia section! This contains trivia and "fun facts" about both Hakuoki's Hijikata and the real life Hijikata-san as they pertain or parallel to each other.
Real Life Hijikata Toshizou
- The real life Hijikata-san wrote under the name "Hogyoku" ("Shinsengumi no makoto").
- He stood only about 5'5" 5'6" but was considered tall for his era ("Shinsengumi no makoto").
- It is thought his favorite color was red as he even had a training guard with red ties ("Shinsengumi no makoto").
- He seemed to be fond of flowers as he referenced them in his haiku and his handguard of his sword and sheath had some carved into them ("Shinsengumi no makoto").
Hakuoki Hijikata Toshizou
- In Hakuoki, if you're on Harada's path, he and a very drunk Nagakura make reference to Hijikata's writing. Someone took the book of poems and it was so bad, they all sat around reading it. They waited until Hijikata entered the room, read it out loud, and laughed at Hijikata's expense (quite often inflicting his wrath). This is also highlighted in Stories of the Shinsengumi, Yamazaki in Days Past I in which Yamazaki and Chizuru clean Okita's room and find a stolen book of poems by Hogyoku. Yamazaki admits that it is the commander's pen name.
- He is given the name Hakuoki loosley translated as "Demon of the Fleeting Blossom" by Kazama Chikage. This also fits with the general idea that he reminds Yukimura of Cherry Blossoms blooming out of season. She often equates him to cherry blossoms despite him being the demon commander.
- He takes a small manner of pride in being called "Demon commander" by his men, but thinks that Sanan has an even worse temper than he does.
- When presented with the idea that someone will have to inform Okita Mitsu, Souji's sister, about Souji's well being Kondo pushes the idea to Hijikata. The vice commander promptly refuses and shows great vehemence against it stating that not even he wants to deal with her wrath.
- According to Kondou, Hijikata is a terrible cook. It seems to be that he used to make some very unique porridge.
- In Adventures of the Shinsengumi, Sanan sends Chizuru to get Hijikata because he has a hard time waking up in the morning.
- In Adventures of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata can be spied on talking to a cat. He almost views the furball as a worthy adversary.
- Hijikata believes that the most beautiful moon is the spring moon because it goes well with cherry blossoms.
- Hijikata has no issue throwing his name around to get what he wants. He does this in Shinsengumi Adventures 2 to help Yukimura get out of Shimabara. Unfortunately, this leads many to believe he ran off and married a geisha.
